CAPITOL UNIVERSITY’S ADVOCACY FOR CULTURE AND THE ARTS The Arts have always provided essential clues as to who we are. (Rob Cotes, Vancouver). In the corpus of expressions such as painting, crafts, rituals, music, dance, theatre, and festivals, the people’s shared values and goals are distinguished, and summed up into what we call culture. Culture and Arts help to recognize and translate both what we presently value and the ideals that determine our future. The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), are the government agencies specifically mandated for the all-time important task of preserving, restoring, and developing that which identify us as a people. On top of these is empowering communities to sustain peaceful, prosperous, and dignified lives. A gargantuan task indeed that rallies for everyone’s involvement to realize mileage and fulfillment. Having proven worthy of its commitment, Capitol University has willingly accepted the Mindanao Regional Partnership bestowed by CCP and the NCCA now running for ten years. CU has provided the avenue for the presentation of seminar/workshops involving the communities’ participation on film-making, painting, art appreciation, choreography, theatre, choral singing, research, literature appreciation, organizing cultural clusters and peace-building programs. At CU, performances are regularly staged by both local and national artists on classical music, ballet, contemporary dance, and theatre. Culture and Arts Appreciation has also been integrated into the curriculum. The CU Glee Club, under the tutelage of the world reknown Madrigal Singers jumpstarted the organization of 49 choral groups in Mindanao to sing songs about unity and peace in the grand concert “Singing Mindanao” two years ago held at Capitol University. This was a dream-come-true of Professor Andrea Veneracion, a National Artist and founder of the Madrigal Singers. Now, on its own, the CU Glee Club has risen to the high standards of choral singing. It is the most sought after singing group in Cagayan de Oro City to perform in important events. The CU Dance Troupe has also gone a long way to develop the aesthetic demands of dancing through the trainings and workshop conducted by the Bayanihan, Ramon Obosan Folkloric Dance Company, Ballet Philippines, and the Douglas Nierras Power Dance. Today, with a diverse repertoire, the CU Dance Troupe is the top dance company in this part of Mindanao. In 2004, CCP celebrated its 25 th Anniversary of the Outreach and Extension Division with “Dalan sa Kalinaw” a dance-drama, depicting Mindanao’s quest for peace and performed by four Mindanao’s top theatre groups. CU hosted the presentation. During the event, Capitol University was awarded, the Pilak Outreach Trophy the only educational institution in Mindanao given such honor. Now the hub of culture and arts in Northern Mindanao, CU looks forward to the involvement of more schools and agencies, because only through unity and peace can our national identity become a pride not only for our country, but also for the world.
